The Ford Model T, Solar Car and the Pedal Bus were major draw cards to the UKZN stand

Well done to the Mechanical Engineering, UKZN, for winning the Best Individual Display at the annual Cars in the Park show in Pietermaritzburg.

The UKZN display consisted of three vehicles, namely the 1926 Ford Model T, Solar Car (that took part in the World Solar Challenge in Australia, 2015) and the Technology Human Powered Pedal Bus. The theme of the stand was: Evolution of Technology in Motor Vehicles.

The national car show attracted over 1500 vehicles from across South Africa. There were more than 60 stands, (individual displays), and over 15 000 people attended this year’s event in perfect weather conditions. While the Solar Car and the Ford Model T were major draw cards for the UKZN stand, it was the Pedal Bus that impressed the judges the most and lead to the stand winning the award.

A big thank you to Strini Govender and the Mechanical Engineering work shop staff, Yushan Reddy, Freedom Mazibuko, Danesh Singh, Brij Chander and Sanil Mahabeer for the effort they put into manufacturing parts for the vehicles and for the transportation of vehicles to and from the show. The contribution of the UKZN Solar Car team and postgraduate students involved is gratefully acknowledged. Lastly, thank you to Gerken Horst and Peter Sinclair for helping out on the day.
